Poker, in general, refers to a whole family of card games that combine skill, strategy, and probability. The objective of almost all variants of poker is to win as many chips as possible in one of two ways:

• by forming the strongest hand at the end of a round or
• by convincing players to quit the round (Fold)

The most widely known variant of poker is known as Texas Hold’em.

Texas Hold’em

Here,

• each player is dealt two private cards (known as "hole cards"),
• while in total five community cards are dealt publicly (known as “board”)

The game is played in four betting rounds

1. Pre-Flop: Players receive their hole cards, and the first round of betting begins.
2. Flop: Three community cards are dealt face-up on the table, followed by a second round of betting.
3. Turn: A fourth community card is dealt, followed by a third round of betting.
4. River: A fifth and final community card is dealt, followed by the final round of betting.

After the last betting round, if more than one player remains, a showdown occurs, where players reveal their hands.

At showdown, the player with the best hand, using any five-card combination of the two hole cards and the five community cards, wins the pot of chips.

Betting round

A betting round can be thought of a phase for players to reach a consensus on how much of their chips should be in play. The betting continues until all active players have made the same decision or only one player remains.

For this, there are a total of five actions:

• Fold: A player decides to discard their hand and quit the ongoing round giving up their chance of winning the pot.
• Check: If no prior bet has been made during the betting round, a player can bet none of their chips by checking.
• Bet: With no prior bet players may place the first bet themselves by adding their chips to the pot.
• Call: If a prior bet has been made, players can no longer check but can match the amount of the last bet.
• Raise: Players can increase the current bet, forcing others to match the new higher amount or fold.

Limits

No-Limit Hold’em:

• Players can bet or raise any amount, up to the total chips they have in their stack.
• This structure allows for high-stakes and dramatic all-in moves.
